The founders wanted their new synagogue to be more welcoming to all Jews, regardless of their wealth or status. The congregation established administrative offices at 241 Euclid Avenue; services and school classes were held at Coventry School in Cleveland Heights. During World War I, he served in the Navy and was a draftsman in the design of naval aircraft. He graduated from the Cleveland School of Art in 1922, and became a commercial artist. Hubbell received his private pilots license in 1927 by exchanging aviation art with flight instructors for flying lessons. He was commissioned by Thompson Products of Cleveland to paint the winning aircraft of each year's Thompson Trophy Race. In 1937, the first Thompson Products aviation art calendar by Charles Hubbell was produced. He painted for the yearly calendar until 1969. The Euclid Avenue Congregational Church was destroyed by fire on March 23, 2010. Dedicated to African American self-determination, the group initially met in secret in order to prevent competition for dollars and outside attempts to control it. The group promoted African American business entrepreneurship and better housing. He grew up in Orange, Ohio, graduated from Williams College in 1856, became president of Hiram College in Portage County, Ohio, and was a lay minister of the Disciples of Christ Church. He was elected to the Ohio Senate, and in 1858, married Lucretia Rudolph. Garfield served in the Civil War, as a lieutenant-colonel of the 42nd Ohio regiment. He was a major general when he resigned in 1863 to take a seat in the United States House of Representatives, where he served for 17 years. Nominated in 1880 as a compromise Republican presidential candidate, his campaign was conducted from Lawnfield, his Mentor, Ohio, home. Garfield was shot on July 2, 1881, and died September 19. A major catalyst to forming the association was the demolition of the original school in 1991 and subsequent efforts to raise funds to place a memorial plaque at the original site. The memorial dedication and installation of a time capsule occurred on Sunday May 19, 1996 at 5310 Carnegie Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. The records in the collection detail activities, events, curriculum, and programs of Jane Addams High School, a vocational school for women. One of the school's activities in the 1940s was an alumni tea for seniors graduating from the school. Another alumni activity in 1951 was to plan a reunion along with the faculty committee. Jeptha Homer Wade spent his early life as an apprentice to a tanner and as a carpenter. He next turned his interest to the emerging telegraph industry. In 1849, he organized the Cleveland and Cincinnati Telegraph Company. In 1857, Wade moved to Cleveland as the Western Union Telegraph Company's first general agent. In 1856 he married Mary Anne Elizabeth Fisher. They were active in many philanthropic enterprises, especially education.
